The Free Speech Union is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and our annual accounts will be published on the Companies House website. We are aiming to raise £300,000 in the next 12 months through a combination of membership dues and donations. In addition to our ‘sword and shield’ activities (protecting our members’ speech rights), the FSU will have a research arm and an educational arm. To date, none of the officers of the company, including Toby Young, have been paid anything, beyond being reimbursed for expenses.

We anticipate that the £300,000 will be spent as follows, assuming we meet this target:

  • Solicitors (up to £60K) (excluding pro bono work, crowd-funding and conditional fee arrangements)
  • Office rental (max. £30K)
  • Admin (£50K)
  • Research (£100K)
  • Promotional Costs (£50K) (website hosting, advertising, merchandising)
  • Travel Costs (£10K)
