Independent Councillor and FSU Member Silenced and Punished for Telling the Truth About Four-Star Hotel Afghan Resettlement Scheme
15 May 2026
John Edwards, an Independent councillor for Sandhurst, is being punished and silenced for telling the truth about an Afghan resettlement hotel scheme in Bracknell.
Last April, Bracknell Forest Council began housing 300 Afghans in a four-star hotel. The scheme provided on-site healthcare and "move-on" support to help Afghans resettle in private rented accommodation, with deposits and upfront rent paid for by the council.
John felt it was important to raise these questions — particularly against the backdrop of thousands of Bracknell residents, including veterans and their families, having waited years for housing. Importantly, all of the information he drew on was already in the public domain.
The council did not appear to welcome his questions about the scheme's impact on local services and residents. Rather than answer them, a Lib Dem councillor and other council staff — who chose to remain anonymous — filed complaints against him. The council subsequently launched a year-long investigation, costing taxpayers £15,000.
During that process, key evidence was withheld from John, his accusers were granted anonymity, and fellow councillors accused him of racism and xenophobia. It was claimed he had been reported to the police, and he was even compared to the murderer of the late MP Jo Cox.
After a year, the independent investigator cleared him of all charges. Rather than accept that finding, the council returned with a new, narrower charge.
John is now accused of bringing his office into disrepute for telling the truth and exposing aspects of the Afghan resettlement scheme that the council did not want the public to know. Throughout, he has not been permitted to put forward a defence. He now faces a hearing at which the same councillors who branded him a racist will decide his fate.
He told FSU External Affairs Officer Connie Shaw on the latest episode of the FSU Podcast: "If it wasn't for the FSU, I literally would have had no one."
The council is using taxpayers' money to fund its action against John — to silence a political opponent.
The Free Speech Union is proud to support him. John now needs your help: if the council succeeds, it will create a blueprint for other councils to silence elected representatives and set a precedent whereby unelected officials decide which policies may be scrutinised and what information the public is permitted to hear.
If you can, please donate to his crowdfunder to help fund his legal defence.
