Is your right to speak freely protected?
One wrong word at work. One post on social media. One opinion in the wrong room. For thousands of people across the UK, speaking their mind has cost them their job, their reputation — or worse. The Free Speech Union exists so that doesn't have to happen to you.
What happens when you join
Immediate expert support
If you face disciplinary action, a police visit, or a cancellation for something you've said, our casework team will typically be in touch within hours. We've done this over 5,000 times.
Legal and media expertise
We have in-house legal and media relations specialists ready to act. You don't face it alone — you face it with a team that has seen it all before.
A deterrent as much as a defence
Some employers back down the moment they learn someone is an FSU member. The threat of well-funded scrutiny changes the calculus — before a single call is made.
Campaigns and systemic change
We don't just fight individual cases. We challenge unjust laws and institutional overreach — so the environment you speak into is fairer for everyone.
Events and a national community
FSU membership connects you with tens of thousands of people who believe in the right to speak freely. Attend our national and online events, hear from leading voices, and know you're part of something bigger than any single case.
We've been there when it mattered
Carl Borg-Neal — employment tribunal
A bank manager used a racial slur during workplace equality training, in the context of discussing how it was used by others. He was sacked. The FSU backed his tribunal claim. He won nearly £500,000 in compensation.
Anonymous YouTuber — workplace dispute
A member's employer threatened disciplinary action over YouTube videos posted in a personal capacity. Upon learning of FSU membership, the employer dropped the matter entirely.
Dulcie Tudor — gender-critical councillor
Independent councillor Dulcie Tudor was investigated over gender-critical Facebook posts. The FSU supported her throughout. An independent investigation cleared her completely.

What if I never need to use it?
Think of it like home insurance. You hope you never need it — but you'll be very glad you have it the day something goes wrong. And the FSU also campaigns for laws and policies that benefit all members, regardless of whether you ever face a personal case.
Is the FSU political?
The FSU is explicitly non-partisan. We defend free speech across the political spectrum — we have supported members whose views span from the progressive left to the traditional right. What unites our members is not ideology but a belief in the right to speak freely.
How does £29.99/year compare to the alternative?
One hour with an employment solicitor typically costs £200–£400. The FSU's concession membership — £29.99 per year — gives you access to a full support team and discretionary legal assistance for the cost of a takeaway.
What kind of cases do you take on?
Workplace disciplinaries, social media pile-ons, police visits for online speech, university investigations, deplatforming, and cancellation campaigns. If it involves someone facing consequences for lawful speech, we want to know about it.
