Mothin Ali, a deputy leader of the Green Party, has sued two of our members for defamation because of things they’ve said about him on social media. We’ve been supporting them — as well as another member who’s also being sued for defamation — and the cases have now been settled. However, they’ve run up considerable legal bills — collectively, in excess of £100,000 — so we’re asking for your help.
These are not rich people and they will have considerable difficulty paying these bills. We’ve done what we can, securing them discounted rates from one of the best legal firms in the country and helping with some of the fees, but fighting defamation claims is extremely expensive. So anything you can do would be hugely appreciated by both us and them.
This will be a time-limited crowdfunder that we’ll close at the end of July.
Donations to this appeal are received and administered as part of the Free Speech Union’s Legal Defence Fund, which exists solely to support legal advice and litigation on behalf of FSU members in free speech cases, and the FSU itself when it brings free speech cases in its own name. They will be applied first to defray the outgoings of the members featured here in respect of their cases, with any surplus retained by the Fund. No part of any donation will be used for the Free Speech Union’s general operating expenses or staff costs.
