The Free Speech Union works directly with young people — in schools, universities, and beyond — to make the case for free speech in everyday life.
What We Do
Young people are among those most exposed to the narrowing of what can be said in public. Students are investigated by their own universities for lawfully held views, societies drop speakers under pressure, and many simply stay quiet because of what speaking would cost them socially. Our education work meets that head on — funding the students who want to open debate up, and going into universities, sixth forms and colleges to argue the case in person.

Our Programmes
Ian Mactaggart Programme
The Ian Mactaggart Programme supports student societies, publications, podcasts, and projects promoting open debate and free expression among young people who believe in freedom of speech. Open to individuals and groups aged 16–30. Grant applications are accepted all year round.
University Visits
We deliver free, interactive talks and debates at universities on free speech law, the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act, current controversies, and what free speech means on campus today. Sessions are hosted by student societies and can be tailored to any free speech issue your society wants to explore.
School & Sixth Form Visits
We deliver free, interactive sessions at sixth forms and colleges — invited by teachers — covering free speech and the law, the work of the FSU, and careers in politics. Sessions map closely onto the A Level Politics specification and can be built around your curriculum or your students' interests.
Student membership — £14.99 for your first year
Half the usual student rate. University students can join the Free Speech Union for £14.99 for their first year with the code FRESHERS26, until 30 October 2026.
