Meet the speaker

Vinay Kapoor

Vinay Kapoor is the Free Speech Union's Education and Engagement Officer. A first-class Politics graduate from the University of Warwick, he founded Warwick Speak Easy — a free speech society that hosted speakers from across the political spectrum.

Vinay has spoken at sixth forms, colleges, and universities across the UK, including at the Durham Union. His sessions have covered free speech law and policy in the UK, tolerance and its limits, and real-world case studies drawn from FSU casework and public debate.

Good-faith disagreement and debate can transcend political divides — and put the focus back on learning.

Campus Talks & Debates

Sessions are hosted by student societies. All sessions are interactive, non-partisan, and rooted in real cases. All sessions are free of charge.

The Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 has reshaped what universities are legally required to permit on campus. Vinay speaks on the implications of that legislation and the live debates it has brought into focus — drawing on FSU casework, current controversies, and the broader question of what free speech means in a university setting today.

Talks and debates we are asked for most
  • Why does free speech matter in universities?
  • Is free speech really under threat in the UK today?
  • Should all ideas be welcome on campus?
  • Policing our tweets — should people be arrested for what they say online?
  • From Charlie Kirk to Palestine Action to Lucy Connolly — what recent cases reveal about free speech and polarisation

Sessions are hosted by student societies. Vinay can also contribute as a guest to Oxford Union-style debates and student-run panels, and sessions can be tailored to any free speech issue your society wants to explore.
