Somerville College had initially given students until Friday to complete the exercise, which one student said took 15 minutes, but changed its policy after the Free Speech Union wrote to its management. The campaign group, which is led by the former journalist and free schools advocate Toby Young, said one of its members was a student at the college. The student complained about being required to take the course, which is designed to help people recognise prejudices or biases they may hold against minority groups, and said it was a breach of their freedom of expression.

As Toby Young, founder of the Free Speech Union, which has helped hundreds of people caught out by the new woke world order, points out: “They are punished for casual remarks they have made in the pub or on social media. We have one member who lost his job because of a WhatsApp message to his now ex-lover. The Big Brother that George Orwell warned about in 1984 is a reality. It is not the state watching everything you say, it’s a troll-army of activists. This madness, which once only infected university campuses, is seeping into the human resources departments . . .”

[Emma Webb, Deputy Research Director at the FSU,] said: “For all of these large corporations and a Prince and his wife to be using their position to censor people they disagree with on the basis of an ideology which is disputed and should not be accepted as if it is somehow politically neutral. That goes beyond winding up normal people. I think that this is a serious crisis of free speech and it poses a significant threat.”

Toby Young, General Secretary of the Free Speech Union, said: “The BBC has been been taken over by the ‘woke’ cult. Its managers are like 17th Century Witchfinder Generals, constantly on the look out for heretics. Any programmes that depart from their narrow ideological dogma are immediately slapped with a moral health warning. Someone needs to remind them that Britain is the birthplace of Parliamentary democracy and the licence-payers who pay their wages believe in free speech.”

To look on the positive side of 2020, we can see that a lot which needs to be done is already in motion. This year, projects like the Free Speech Union, Don’t Divide Us and the Equiano Project were set up. There have recently been some important victories for free speech in universities. And this month, the government decided to drop ‘unconscious bias training’ from the civil service. All of this shows that resistance is beginning to stir.
