Freedom of religion is a mainstay of a liberal society. It gives people the right to practice their religion without state interference. Religious freedom was a hard-won right in the British Isles, following centuries of religious persecution, and we should do everything in our power to defend it.
The Church of England has not always been a friend of free speech. Anglican bishops called for The Life of Brian to be banned – and it was banned in some regions of the UK – and blasphemy laws weren’t abolished in England and Wales until 2008. In Ireland, blasphemy was still a crime until 2020. But today, with Christianity in decline in the UK, the boot is on the other foot.
Christians find themselves under attack in Britain’s towns and cities, whether it’s the evangelical preacher Hatun Tash being arrested at Speakers’ Corner, orthodox Christian schools being punished by Ofsted for not celebrating Pride Month or Tim Farron finding it difficult to continue as leader of the Liberal Democrats because of his pro-life views.
Just as it was important to defend non-Christians from Christian intolerance 50 years ago, so it’s vital that we defend Christians from secular intolerance today.
