“… cancel culture is not about criticism. In a democracy, free speech includes criticism, harsh criticism, debate, discussion – all of those things are welcome. But cancel culture is something very specific: it is a public vilification campaign, it is a dehumanising process which seeks to completely destroy somebody’s livelihood, to exclude them from public life and to completely disregard often decades of contribution that they’ve made.”
